Thanks for your quick response. I also wrote down some formulae based on combinations, but I couldn't see how to analytically calculate the variance (although a spreadsheet implementation agrees with your formula). This approach looks a lot easier. I'll think about it this weekend.

I don't have the book in front of me, but I believe the formula appears on page 92 of TOB, second edition. (I guess it's time to get an updated version, but I'm holding onto my old edition, hoping it will become a collector's item.) :-)
