Basic Strategy

Some people are visual learners and like to learn from colorful charts. You may wish to try the Basic Strategy Engine by Ken Smith. Or, if you prefer, the following tables illustrate the specific basic strategy for each of the games listed. Hopefully, your browser allows you to see the colors. If not, the legend is there as a backup. S17 means the dealer stands on soft 17 and H17 means the dealer hits a soft 17.

Here's the original basic strategy article from 1956:
Baldwin, Roger; Cantey, Wilbert; Maisel, Herbert; and McDermott, James "The Optimum Strategy In Blackjack," Journal of the American Statistical Association, Vol 51, 429 - 439 (1956) [pdf format; 1.1M]
Here is a Transcription of Dr. Griffin's FAX sent to Don Schlesinger after Dr. Griffin was notified of Steve Jacob's results indicating an error in the basic strategy table published in The Theory of Blackjack.
